Happy Birthday!

I wasn't sure what to do for my mom's birthday. Just because she's gone doesn't mean I can't remember her in some way. So I figured I share a few things about her, the things I remember best.

My mom had warm eyes and strong, beautiful hands. She loved doing her nails. Jewel of India was her favorite pink Opi nail polish. Right after her manicures she'd go straight to work in her garden. She had a serious green thumb, plants and flowers loved her. She could bring just about any plant back from the brink and encourage them to grow even when they didn't want to. She loved to garden. Roses were one of her favorites, but she also loved lilies. Tigerlilies, stargazer lilies... Her favorite colors were the colors of every flower she ever grew in her garden. The one thing she missed the most, besides me and my sis, when she moved away from Washington was her garden with all her flowers, fruit trees, and her favorite rose bush, Big Red. I'm not kidding, either. Big Red was a 5 foot tall rose bush with huge red roses. Big Red missed her, too.

For my mom, fishing and crabbing wasn't a hobby, it was a way of life. Every weekend, every summer. Man, was I ever sick of seafood. Not my parents, they could never get enough. She and my dad would spend their free time on the floating docks of Cornet Bay catching fish and crab. Salmon season always got her excited. It reminded her of Yokosuka when the Suzuki and the Yellow-tail made their runs. An exciting catch. She loved the ocean. Some of my best memories were of playing in the sand and helping her dig up clams. I can't look at a body of water and not think of her.

When I watch her favorite anime like the Slayers, I sometimes think I hear her laughing and I remember when we laughed like Naga. [Only other Naga fans would get that joke. :) ] She loved Lord of the Rings, but she loved Harry Potter more, she was disappointed that she wouldn't be around to read the ending. She bet me 5 bucks Dumbledore would be back. I bet her Snape hadn't really turned on Dumbledore. We'll see who owes who. Maybe we'll break even. Still, my mom was the better gambler. I sucked at stuff like that.

Even when she was driving me crazy, I loved her still. I will miss her always, but I will never forget.
